The frontline of fall defense

Understanding fall risks in older adults

Older adults are at an elevated risk of falling and often experience severe injuries as a result. Experiencing a fall or helping a loved one recover from a fall can be distressing, but is a surprisingly common problem. In fact, around 3 million older patients go to the ER each year due to a fall injury and over 800,000 are hospitalized. Many injuries can be quite severe as falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for those over 65.

Fortunately, the risk of falling can be significantly reduced. Making lifestyle changes, such as increasing exercise, adjusting medications and selecting the right footwear substantially helps. Additionally, home modifications, such as removing loose rugs, rearranging furniture and making everyday items easier to reach, help prevent falls. The StandStrong fall prevention program focuses on making these changes while helping individuals improve strength and balance through physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Our proven fall prevention program

StandStrong’s fall prevention program has been shown to reduce the chances of falling by more than 50%. Our program includes physical therapy to increase strength and improve balance, occupational therapy to make everyday tasks safer, and a home fall risk assessment to help reduce fall hazards. In addition, we conduct medication screenings to avoid medication-related balance issues and vision screenings to decrease tripping and other vision-related falls. This combined approach helps ensure that our patients are as safe, empowered, and independent as possible.

An occupational therapist’s role

Occupational therapists play a key role in our fall prevention program, helping patients become more mobile and confident in their day-to-day tasks. After an evaluation of a patient’s home environment, an occupational therapist will offer guidance and strategies to anticipate and avoid fall risks. Additionally, occupational therapy will help patients overcome their fear of falling so they can independently go about their day-to-day activities with confidence.

Your occupational therapist will provide guidance and training on more safely performing daily tasks. Working together, each patient’s individual needs will be addressed so that he or she can maintain (and even increase) confidence and independence.

Ready to start your fall prevention journey? Find the best occupational therapist near you! StandStrong and our qualified providers work hard to make daily life as safe as possible for older adults—without giving up what makes life special.

The physical therapist’s role

Physical therapists also play a fundamental role in our fall prevention program, helping older adults with limited mobility increase and improve their strength and balance. Many patients start physical therapy after suffering a fall injury, but our team of physical therapists believes that physical therapy should start before a fall to more effectively prevent falls and injuries. Our goal is to help reduce the risk of future falls. Daily living shouldn’t be a challenge, and all activities should be pursued with confidence!

After connecting with a StandStrong physical therapist, an appointment will be scheduled to assess the patient’s current needs and fall risks. The therapist will then design a physical therapy regimen that will boost the patient’s strength and balance. This regimen can include resistance training, balance exercises, multitasking while walking and more.

Physical therapy can help patients to improve their strength and balance, empowering them to regain mobility, avoid falls and maintain their independence. Connect with one of our qualified providers to start your fall prevention journey today.

Start your own practice

Have you thought about starting your own physical therapy or occupational therapy home health practice? StandStrong helps you start and manage your own physical therapy practice or occupational therapy practice. You own 100% of this practice.

Because of the widespread need and effectiveness of fall prevention physical therapy and occupational therapy, we suggest providing fall prevention and related care to older adults in their homes. However, you are not restricted to fall prevention therapy. You can provide any physical or occupational therapy permitted under your license. For example, you can provide post-surgery physical therapy for joint replacements.

You provide care in patient’s homes which allows you to provide very effective fall prevention interventions, is convenient for the patient and saves you the cost and risk of leasing clinic space. However, you do have the option of opening and treating patients in your own clinic.

The history of StandStrong

Our founder, Cary Edgar, created StandStrong after helping start and manage over 100 PT/OT practices in the past 20 years. Cary realized there wasn’t a network focused on helping patients connect with the best fall-prevention focused physical therapists and occupational therapists around the nation. Using his unique insight into the industry, he created the StandStrong network and our fall prevention program based on the latest research.

Although physical therapy alone can significantly reduce the risk of falls, we have found that it is even more effective when combined with occupational therapy, home assessments and, medication and vision screenings. Our combined approach helps us deliver consistent and superior results for the patients who count on our network.
